Redbournbury Water Mill
Conversion of an existing cart shed to an education space and a bakery shop
Architect: Elbourn Architects
Project Value: Undisclosed
Planning and LBC granted: December 2025
Redbournbury Mill is a grade 2* listed flour mill on a site of archaeological importance. It is thought that there has been a mill on the site since the early 11th Century.
The current mill house and water mill date from the mid 18th century and was repaired and rebuilt after a fire in 1984. The mill produces stone-ground organic flours principally from locally grown grains powered by an oil-fired engine. The mill is open to the public for tours and school visits. The Mill installed a bakery in a converted outbuilding in 2006. Flour and freshly made bread are sold to the public and local businesses. The baker also runs popular day-long bakery courses
The project involves converting an existing cart shed store adjacent to the bakery to a new bakery shop / educational talks, and lunch space for visitors on bakery courses and volunteers. Our scheme aims to preserve and repair the historic fabric of the cart shed whilst making some minor alterations, to stabilise the structure and upgrade the space to become a practical useable space, hence safeguarding the cart sheds future.
