The Old Studio

Replacement dwelling, Surrey

Elbourn Architects are currently working to deliver a new-build home on this delightful, generous site. The building will be approached via a walled courtyard drive and look out onto a large and beautiful rear garden sloping down to the river, with uninterrupted views of the area of the Surrey Hills

The existing bungalow and attached studio on the site are located between two Listed buildings, in a Conservation Area, in an area of archaeological interest and overlooking an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The project involves replacing an existing 1950’s/60’s bungalow and outbuildings in poor condition with a new 2 storey house and detached garage. The Old Studio on the site which is of historic interest will be repaired and retained as a separate building.

Our proposed building has an H shaped plan reminiscent of that often found in small old English Manor houses with brick and rendered walls, gabled clay tiled roofs and dormer windows typical of the character of the local area. The projecting wings of the building and the use of dormer windows break up and articulate the form of the building, thus reducing the appearance of its overall mass. Windows and glazed doors are positioned to make the most of the significant views from the building out to the extensive gardens and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty beyond. We aim to considerably improve the views from the AONB and the village street of the site with a new high-quality home, carefully detailed and executed in keeping with the local vernacular and in the spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement.
