Sopwell Lane

Extension, alteration and repair of a 17th century cottage, St Albans

Timber beaded boarding, bespoke windows, owl window, hand made tiled roof, timber framed extension

The cottage dates from around 1600 and is grade II listed. It had been extended in the Georgian and Victorian eras and again in the 1960's. Our work involved adding a further contemporary extension to the rear and reordering of the existing accommodation to include an upstairs bathroom. We also conducted a complete repair and refurbishment including bespoke joinery throughout and soft and hard landscaping improvements.

The new first floor extension consists of a hand-crafted timber frame built in situ and sandwiched between two earlier additions. A new steep handmade tiled roof has a tiled under cloak. The extension is clad externally with painted wide bead edged timber boarding to match other examples in the street. Tiles salvaged from the build were used to create a circular decorative feature in the brick garden terrace.
