Skiddaw Boarding House

New sixth form boarding house at St George’s School, Harpenden.

Boarding house, en suite bedrooms, common room, medical centre, staff facilities, state boarding school, conservation area, residential area

Skiddaw was built on a sensitive site in the conservation area close to the boundary with neighbours and a line of mature trees. In response to the residential context, we reduced the overall mass and scale of the building by dividing it into two separately roofed elements linked by a glazed entrance and staircase. Rear first floor windows have been carefully arranged to maximise daylight into the rooms and give views without compromising the privacy of neighbouring gardens. Accommodation includes ensuite study bedrooms, a common room and medical centre.
