St Georges School, Harpenden. New Sixth Form Boarding House “Skiddaw”
This was a challenging project.
St Georges School required a new building to accommodate increased boarding capacity, associated recreational spaces, staff bed sit accommodation and offices. A new medical centre with sick bays and surgery was also required. Available space for the building was limited and the site was very sensitive being in a Conservation Area, close to the boundary with residential neighbours and close to a line of mature trees.
Elbourn Architects Ltd initially produced a feasibility study to assist with a funding bid. When this was successful they then developed a detail design with the client and worked closely with the Local Authority to obtain Planning Permission. EA Ltd designed the building to respond to its environment and to provide a positive and attractive contribution to the Conservation Area. The overall scale and mass of the building was reduced by dividing it into two separately roofed elements. linked by a recessed glazed entrance and staircase area.
