“From concept through design to project build and final completion it was a pleasure working with Brian. Nothing was too much trouble and he coordinated everyone with skill and patience, was a real team player, sorting niggle issues promptly and decisively, as well as dealing with possible serious planning threats with authority and success. My Governors and I were very grateful that he took the lead on everything, consulting when necessary and keeping us informed at every step. As the Headmaster of large school with countless tasks filling every week and term I knew that Brian's support and guiding hand would carry each project through, delivering on time and with the minimum of disruption and tension. We have been delighted with the finished product on every occasion.”
Norman Hoare OBE MA Headmaster St Georges School Harpenden 1987- 2012
I first contacted Brian and Jennifer Elbourn in 2002, when the enormity of taking over a listed Prep School situated in the middle of the Green Belt, had begun to settle in. The school had expanded rapidly and the facilities needed to follow suit and the planners were in no mood for a piecemeal approach.
Over the next nine months the Bursar, Elbourns and I put together a ten year ‘Master Plan’, which was endorsed by the Governing Body and accepted by the local planning council. There were good days and push backs but the Elbourns used all their experience, architectural skill and charm to produce a plan that was both imaginative and right for the site. We had a lot of fun and the quality of their work is there for all to see.
Michael Wilson (former Headmaster of Edge Grove)
"The work carried out at St. Julian's Church in St. Albans has completely revolutionised
the way in which we can use the facilities. The imaginative way in which Elbourn
Architects enabled us to add a modest extension to the building have provided us
with a light and welcoming new entrance, improved toilet facilities and a servery
and kitchen over double the size of the original. The attention to detail and careful
matching of materials has meant that the new build harmonises with the existing building.
Since the completion of the project we have been able to provide a much better welcome
at St. Julian's not just for those who come to use the building as a church but also
the many community groups which meet there. In the late autumn of 2012 we established
a Community Cafe which is open every Thursday an initiative which would have been
inconceivable before the improvements were carried out. Elbourn Architects were helpful
and attentive to our needs throughout and the project was completed within the budget."
